4 Storage Trends for the “New World”


During times like these data is still growing exponentially as people are sending even more time creating and collaborating and generating content from their home offices. Here are 4 key trends for the coming year that are changing the game from a cost, performance and simplicity perspective.


1. Cloud based enterprise storage

Many organisations have already moved a lot of their workloads to the cloud or are planning a some Hybrid Cloud architecture. Cloud native storage from AWS, GCP and Azure does not always have many of the enterprise features and maturity of the Enterprise storage. NetApp has been the leader in this space with the Cloud Storage offering where you can run their Virtual storage platform as an overlay on top on Cloud Storage and get all the resilience, performance and data protection features of an on-premises array. Other vendors like Pure Storage have a great Cloud Native offering with their Cloud Block Store. Other vendors like HPE have Cloud Volumes where you run an actual array in a data centre like Equinix with a Direct Connect into AWS or Azure and get sub millisecond latency into your Cloud based compute with all the benefits of an on-premises array. Dell EMC have virtual versions of the mid-range products that you can run on the Cloud and even a solution to expand your VMware on AWS storage into Cloud Native storage by partnering with Faction.

2. Dis-aggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure

There is a new trend called Hyperconverged 3.0 which solve the issues inherent in Hyperconverged solutions where you have to scale CPU, memory and Storage together. This is great where your applications grow linearly like VDI but most applications do not grow in this manner and it is advantageous to be able to scale compute and storage separately as required. Datrium is the leader and innovator in this space and HPE has released a DHCI solution utilising Nimble storage with DL 380 G10 servers with a management overlay.

3. NVMe over Fabrics

This delivers millions of IOPS most of the mainstream vendors are including this in their products already. The new generations of HPE and Dell EMC platforms are NVMe ready and there are many start-ups in this space.

4. Storage class memory (SCM)

Intel are driving next level performance with storage class memory. This is moving performance closer to the CPU into the memory layer. HPE has been leading the charge including this in their server products with Dell following closely. Pure Storage has been innovating with have SCM as a cache in their SAN’s so that the increased performance is shared across all the workloads. This is perfect for workloads like SAP HANA and Microsoft is supporting SCM for SQL workloads. You don’t even need the Enterprise version of SQL to support it. If you have massively IO intensive data bases this is great for you.
